The local currency is Kenya shillings (Kshs) or Tanzanian shillings(Tshs). Almost in all lodges you can change Euros to local curency although exchange rates are poor in hotels. It is important you change money at bureaus at the airport or at the border. It is important to know that in both Kenya and Tanzania Dollar notes which were issued in 1997 are not used (In some ares notes of earlier that 2000 are not allowed). Credit cards are usable in tourist areas, lodges, hotels but this depends on the area. It is not advisable to use them because the commision charged on them is very high. In short you need Kshs or Tshs to pay small bills like drinks and Euros for big bills, souvenires e.t.c.).
